A welcoming gastropub serving delicious Sunday roasts for all the family

Finding a family-friendly pub that serves up great food while catering to little children can be tricky, but The Chequers at Burcot ticks all the right boxes. This charming Oxfordshire gastropub is well-known for its award-winning food and welcoming atmosphere. So, one Sunday we decided to take the whole family to see if it’s as family friendly as it seems online.

First Impressions

We parked in the onsite free parking and walked into the 400-year-old pub in the heart of Burcot. Inside, we were greeted by a warm, rustic interior with plenty tables full of happy, smiling customers.  The staff were friendly and accommodating, helping us get settled right away and providing a highchair for the littlest one. Despite its sophisticated gastropub feel, it didn’t feel too formal for kids, which is always a plus when dining out with young children.

The Sunday Lunch Menu

The Sunday roast selection was impressive, featuring locally sourced meats and seasonal vegetables. We weren’t sure the kids would eat a whole roast dinner from the kid’s menu (sometimes they can be quite picky) so we ordered something we’ve never seen on a Sunday lunch menu before – the Roast Sharing Platter. This was designed to feed 2 people and is quite expensive at £30 per person, however it fed us as a family of 4. It was beautifully presented on this sharing board. There was chicken breast from the Cotswold's, a few pork bites from Royal Windsor and 12-hour roasted Hereford beef. All of them were cooked to perfection. We ordered a few sides including the vegetable platter and some tenderstem broccoli. The kids loved the huge Yorkshire puddings, and the gravy was rich and flavourful. And the roast potatoes were just wonderful.

Family-Friendly Features

Beyond the food, what makes a restaurant truly family-friendly is the little details. The Chequers at Burcot does a great job of making families feel welcome, offering highchairs, baby-changing facilities, and a bustling atmosphere where kids can be a little bit noisy and it’s absolutely fine. Towards the end of the meal, the staff could see our kids were getting a bit fed up with sitting down and brought the bill over quickly. Little things like this make a huge difference to families so this was greatly appreciated. As we left, the lady managing the front of house told us to visit Horace of Burcot (the cow mascot outside the front of the pub) on our way to the car. For the kids, it just topped off a great lunch time.
